Gambrel woke sprawled in his bed, one side warmer than the other. One sleepy eyelid open, he spotted Vangee tucked into his embrace, her hair in disarray over his arm and chest. She sighed, stretched until one leg rode his thigh. Like any man who woke with a beautiful woman at hand, his thought turned to passion.

Coaxing his drowsy lover, he eased her up onto his body. She covered him like a small but seductive swathe. From there, he massaged the shapely muscles of her bottom. The warm smell of their lust drifted from her skin.

The windows in the rear wall remained opaque. Was it morning rise already? Black space surrounded the fleet now. Seven bells rang above decks. The early watch neared its end.

Vangee woke with a smile and a sigh so sweet that Gambrel’s heart flip-flopped in his breast. Soft kisses caressed his nipples. Her skin warmed more, and the scent of woman pressed into his senses. Slowly she reared above his body, her back arched, her hands working the muscles of his shoulders, chest, waist. The cheeks of her firm backside surrounded his shaft. Sensual words filled his ear as she knelt over his hips, got his hands where she wanted them then reached between her legs.

Gambrel almost came off the bed when she clutched his arousal in a firm velvet grip. With the skill of one recently taught, one who took pleasure from the lesson, Vangee guided his blood-filled erection to her opening.

“I want you.” Her last words as she lowered her sheath around him, her inner muscles squeezing and pressing. She drove him mad with need.

“Ride me. Pull my mind from my body.” His hands settled so hard against her waist she whimpered, but clasped them to her side when he tried to move them away.

“Never think you hurt me. Only if you go away.” She performed a sensual dance upon his shaft. “Never leave me,” she whispered and proceeded to drive him out of his mind.

He weathered her force and met her evenly, his own body powering into her softness, grinding his bones against hers, his injuries forgotten in the magic of loving Vangee.

Their climax erupted with such fury their screams surely rang along the lower decks. Neither noticed nor cared how much noise they made. Pure light filled them.

Vangee glowed. Her mystic light shown through his closed eyes. He imagined the brightness, but opened his eyes to see the illumination real. Astride his hips, head back, arms straight, fingers bruising his upper arms, a spectral beauty surrounded her.

The luminosity brightened further. He swore his body had been sucked into hers. The light faded, and he slowly reentered his own casket of bones, muscle, and blood.

“What happened?” Gambrel asked first because he drew breath sooner than her. She still appeared locked in some holy illumination. Did this have anything to do with being a Radiant?

The glow around her faded slowly.

He forgot his question when she collapsed like a boneless lump onto him. For a minute he worried she might be mind-lost or ill. When she blew a loud snort of air into the hairs of his chest, he smiled. Nothing wrong. Just worn out.

“Good?” He had to ask even as he knew the answer. She didn’t see his wide grin.

“I have nothing to compare with this,” Vangee admitted. “No man before you has come to me so I cannot say if you are better than any other.”

He stiffened in indignation.

She laughed. “I can certainly say this time was the best we have yet shared.”

With no modesty, she sprawled out upon him, one hand on a nipple, her legs wide across his hips. Her woman’s wetness still watered his shaft.

One large hand pushed her tangled purple curls off her face to lay down her back. “You are a wanton woman. And a fast learner,” he complimented with nothing but the truth. “Though my cock thinks it should be buried in your tempting body, we should get to our duties.”

A loud groan denied the necessity, but she got up. “You are a beautiful man.” She kissed him.

“Men are not beautiful, Vangee. Such words dig at our manhood.” He sounded insulted, but the denial of appearance came out sounding funny.

“Be that as you wish. You are a strikingly handsome man.” She wobbled when she stood.

Gambrel lay flat on his back but held out a hand to steady her. “You are sore?” After the activities of the full-dark, her slow walk across the deck to the dressing panel represented a feat of mind over bruised body. He refrained from chuckling in pleasure. She would think him laughing at her discomfort.

When ready to leave the cabin, Gambrel stopped Vangee. “A word.” How to say what he must? He hesitated so long she tried to go around him.

“I say this though it pains me. This is truth, however, and not to be denied. I love you. You don’t love me. You shared an incredible full-dark with me. You say I fascinated you from the beginning.”

She nodded but shot him an odd glance.

“Be that the way it is or not, we must be on our guard so others do not think less of you for what we did. Some day you will part from me, and this will be a fond memory. I would not change a sixty-brace of it. But you will forget it times from now. You will perhaps love Boratax, the explorer. I will no longer matter.”

Though he loved and wanted her more than his next breath, he assumed she did not share the same passion. She embraced wholeheartedly what they did in the dark, but that was not enough to build a future on.

A look he had never seen crossed her face.

“Are you finished?” Soft words hissed like the sound of an angry water flyer. Dark gray eyes snapped, the yellow slits narrow and cold looking. Her expression hardened into a deep scowl.

What did he say wrong?

Her fury burst over him. “You know what you think but never asked me what I think. You told me what I will believe.” A bottom-deep breath expanded her chest. “Do not think for me!” Vangee snarled his words back at him. “I might wish to forget this times from now? What do you know of what I wish? You never asked me.” She opened the door so hard it rattled. “Men!” The portal shook as she slammed it closed.

Gambrel stood with limp hands at his side and gaping mouth, lost in pure ignorance.

“Was I so near the other side, Vangee?” Despite two seven-days, the wounds on Gambrel’s back and rear still oozed fluid and could not abide clothes. He lay on his stomach, a cover pulled to his waist.

“I have no notion how near death you were, ‘Brel.”

His name on her lips sounded good. Never before had he appreciated that.

“You lay so still I often put my hand on your chest to make sure it rose and sank. We have no medical aboard so we relied on our own knowledge. Several medicals on other ships monitored you and said you should rest. You rested well. And long.”

“In a few morning rises, you may be able to put on pants. Maybe a tunic. I suspect you will be moving carefully a bit longer. No running the lines for you. Or Pessios. His broken arm heals but still needs time.” Vangee came to sit on the edge of the bed. He took her hand as he did whenever she drew near.

“Do the others know what you did? Projecting?”

“None, but the captain. Many admit they grew calmer during the height of the storm. So, we performed well.” When he shook his head, she asked, “Why do you do that?”

“I did nothing but offer my strength. You projected the emotions to the fleet.” If the same situation arose, would he do such again? His mouth twitched in irony. Of course. If needed, he would do whatever she wanted.

Neither spoke of the promise given before the projecting. Did she forget, or was she too scared? Either way, his body wasn’t ready to teach her the art of making love.

He let the issue lie dormant. Vangee Windrum deserved a man more worthy than him. She warranted more than a few moments of loving. She needed a lifetime commitment. His love and protection were all he offered. The only commitment he acknowledged was killing Handid.

Morning rises came, and eventides went. Vangee resumed her regular routine as soon as Gambrel was able to move around though he did not dress properly for another seven-day.

Their relationship changed the day she explored his body. Now time waited for her to consummate the promise.

Someone knocked at the door. Gambrel stood though every muscle protested. Stavin, one of the crew, waited outside. “Captain Merlo requests you come to his cabin.”

“Problem, Stavin?” They navigated the narrow passageway.

“Not for me to say, sire, but I think not.” The sailor smiled, opened the captain’s door, and stood aside.

“Captain. You sent for me?” He accepted the other’s welcome, a firm clasp of forearms.

“You look well. This is your first full-light up and out of the cabin?” Someone kept the man well informed.

“Indeed, it is, and I am wearier than I expected,” Gambrel admitted with a grin. He accepted the clear-cut of ale Merlo offered and took a seat.

“I won’t keep you long then. Wanted to see for myself you are mending. Several medicals throughout the fleet want a report on your condition. You will wear markings on your back for the rest of your life. A reminder of this voyage.” Merlo saluted him with a clear-cut of wine.

Gambrel accepted his words and drank as well.

“I must also thank you for helping Vangee with the projecting,” the captain added.

Gambrel waved aside his thanks. “I offered my strength, and she used it. That’s all.”

“Knowing you might die, I think. For a long while, we wondered if you would sleep forever, your life force drained so much. Good news the day I heard you awoke in good senses.” Merlo accepted Gambrel’s modesty but thanked him anyway.

“Your face wears lines of strain and weariness. I will let you go to bed now. Thank you for joining me. Good even.” Again, the two men clasped arms in a firm embrace of friendship and respect.

* * * *

Because of his visit with Merlo, Gambrel arrived in his cabin late. He planned to clean in the personal facilities and be asleep well before Vangee returned for the full-dark.

Getting up at first morning rise. Mingling with those he hadn’t seen in a long while. Working light duty with Domas. Fatigue rode him hard. When he was an enforcer, he had never been injured this seriously. This weakness surprised and frustrated him.

Only two glows shone when he stepped from his cleansing. A drying sheet covered his hips. Another swathed his head. He had chosen a liquid cleansing. The heat and pressure massaged his tired muscles. To his surprise, the dressing panel moved aside, and Vangee emerged, tying the sash of her sleeping robe.

“I thought you would be at the reading far later.” Discomfort washed over Gambrel.

“Farrin the Scholar read wonderfully. His voice created each character well. The young ones love when he reads vid stories. Even older ones like me enjoy it.” Her innocent smile settled his jumpy nerves.

She put her clothes away while he sat on the bed, prepared to comb the tangles out of his long hair. His hiss of pain drew her attention.

“Does it hurt when you raise your arm?” She sat beside him.

He rotated his shoulder. Healing skin across his shoulder pulled as the wound mark formed. Painful it wasn’t. Annoying it was.

“No pain. The skin pulls, that’s all. It’s uncomfortable.”

“Turn sideways.” She reached over his shoulder and took the brush. “Let me help.”

Before he could do or say anything, she turned him by his shoulders and pulled his black hair behind him. Mist still dampened the straight thick locks. At the brush’s first pull, Gambrel shut his eyes and sank into delicious decadence.

Long steady strokes from the crown of his head down soothed him. The rhythm became hypnotic. He almost slumped in relaxed pleasure.

“This wound needs some cream to loosen it. Puckers run up and down your back.” She pushed the drying sheet around his hips to one side.

A light touch, like a fairy flyer, skimmed his rear where new skin finally covered the large burn. Immediately his mind went from the contentment of hair brushing to other more intimate pleasures. He glanced over his shoulder. Vangee worked in deep concentration. She didn’t notice his attention.

“This wound also needs dressing. You’ll wear a fierce mark, I’m afraid.” She patted the healing scar innocently then caught Gambrel’s gaze.

“What’s the matter?” Her laugh sounded strained. Her smile froze on her lips. Suddenly she sprang from the bed and headed across the room. “I’ll get the cream and rub it on since you have trouble reaching your back.” She babbled nervously.

“Come here.” He patted the cover next to him. She approached, hesitant, her eyes wide with misgiving. That hurt his feelings. “Are you afraid of me?”

When she settled close but not near enough, he sighed.

Vangee hung her head and blushed.

“What are you thinking, lady?” He meant his words to soothe.

“You will think me foolish.” Her answer came so soft he almost didn’t hear.

“You? Foolish?” Would humor disarm her fear? He pushed a strand of purple hair behind her ear.

“On occasion,” she admitted with her head still down, a smile beginning.

“And what foolishness are you doing right now?” The humor continued as he smiled and cradled one of her hands in his.

“Maybe not foolish but… I feel ignorant.” That breathy admission surprised Gambrel.

“Ignorant, lady? You are the least ignorant person I know.” His sincere compliment sent another flush through her pale skin.

“You know what I mean.” She almost buried her chin in her chest, trying to hide from him. However, she made no move to leave his side.

For a heartbeat, he wondered what she talked about. Then he realized—the promise. She said once she knew nothing of love. A daughter’s love for a father only. She wanted to learn more.

She chose this eventide to keep her promise, but knew not how to initiate the act. This lack of knowledge frightened her. He needed something to get her mind off the final act and lead her gently into loving.

“I watch you sleep sometimes.”

“You do?” Her eyes widened with surprise this time. She blushed so deeply that her skin glowed.

Gambrel chuckled because he suspected the cause of her body fire. “And why the blush?”

“Maybe sometimes I watch you too.”

“Yes?”

She nodded but would not meet his gaze.

“Do you know what I see when I look at you?” Gambrel focused on her image in his mind’s eye. “A tender woman with power. Your spirit and warmth match the fire in your eyes. Your commanding presence balances a delicate nature. A woman of wonderful contrasts and constant challenges. Once I got past how beautiful you were, I saw the splendor of your true inner self. Believe me, aging will not dim the loveliness of one such as you.”

“’Brel? You make me sound so perfect. I am not. You’ve seen me in grief, anger, and desperation. How can you say those things?” She squeezed his hand to emphasize her point.

Lifting her fingers to his lips, he kissed the tips. “I agree. But you are the woman I love, and that makes you perfect to me.”

“Oh ‘Brel.” Vangee leaned into him until her head rested on his shoulder. She sat there for a while. “The first time I met you, I thought you a most singularly interesting man.” His snort of disbelief made her laugh. “I did!” Curled up closer to his side, she added, “I saw a huge man—far bigger than any I’d ever seen—come at me with a maniacal expression on his face. Your battle cry was loud enough to scare the gods. You were compelling.” She sighed as she recalled their meeting. “There we were, fighting to save our lives, and I wondered how I could keep you if we lived.”

“Keep me?”

“You know, keep you near so we could become acquainted.” She punched him on the arm. “I took you home with me for safety, yes, but also so you would not disappear. But…” Her voice grew soft. “I didn’t know what to do after we were alone.” She valiantly stared him straight in the eyes. “I wanted you to see me as a woman, not some spectral being. But I didn’t know how to talk to you. So, I remained silent. The gods of the universe stepped in and brought you aboard the Fenix. I thank them.”

“But your father died so I could sail with you. What kind of trade is that?” He thrilled to learn how much she wanted him from the start, but her final confession made no sense.

“I think the gods planned this. Father certainly would be pleased at how things worked out. He only wanted my happiness.”

“Are you?” Gambrel held his breath.

“Am I what?”

“Happy.” He swallowed loudly. An uneasy question. An important answer.

“At this exact moment in time, I am the happiest I have ever been,” Vangee admitted, a contented sigh brushed against his cheek. She pulled away enough to look him in the face. Then leaned up and kissed him, slowly but hesitantly, not certain how to go about a proper kiss.

“Come.” Her hand in his, Gambrel helped her stand then led her around his legs so she sat on his lap. Both arms encircled her waist as she leaned against his shoulder. For a few heartbeats, both enjoyed the other’s warmth.

Her head tipped back, Gambrel lowered his until he breathed on her lips. “The promise kept?”

“Aye, sire. The promise kept.”  And Vangee reached for his mouth, taking his lips with hers. At first, she touched then backed off. Bolder, she returned for another kiss, a bit longer, more searching.

He turned her head a little. She met his kiss with a sigh; they fit together so well. His lips were firm but soft while his tongue played against the seam of her mouth. Shyly she opened for him and let him caress her. A sweet flavor, a tantalizing sweep of tongue against hers.

Lost in this heady exploration of taste and texture, she leaned in closer, her breasts flattened against his dark distended nipples. Beneath her rear, his body filled with need. Hers spiraled in direct proportion.

Gambrel cupped her head with a large hand. Her kisses drugged him like Cybrian wine. Sweet Vangee. Opening for him.

His other hand moved down her side, relishing the silkiness of her gown, the coolness of the material over the heat of her flesh. His palm rode each rib, dipped into the curve at her waist and rested there, massaged her body, memorizing every inch. More. So much more to come.

His palm spread wide over her generous hip then slid to the roundness of her rear, sensuous pleasure fueling each nerve ending. Gambrel filled his hands with her lushness, heard her groan. Down her leg he found the hem of her robe. Under the coolness, he discovered her bare skin. Skin that teased him with its silkiness. Up his palm moved, to her mound of tempting flesh, massaged it. He grew so hard his body almost lifted Vangee.

Her heartfelt sigh pleased him. She enjoyed kissing him as much as he enjoyed kissing her. Now to show her more. Easing off a bit, Gambrel used his lips to pull hers into his mouth where he suckled the tender skin.

A quick learner, she imitated him until he wondered who was teacher and who the student. Too soon his body hurt from need and pressure. Closer still, he kissed her once before laying her on the bed. He slipped in close, pulled her against his chest, in need of another fiery kiss. The drying sheet fell to one side, his arousal exposed.

He ground his hips against her stomach, caught her gaze, and thrust once more. Did she understand? “You stroked me before, love. Do it again.”

She reached for him, a tremulous stroke. Her face nestled in his chest as if embarrassed, but she fondled his balls. Her warm palm circled his shaft.

His jaw almost popped, he grit his teeth so hard. Her innocent touch fired his body to desperation. Heat beat at each nerve. Thunder filled his ears. Slowly, he reminded himself. Slowly. Vangee had never mated, and her first time was all-important. Never mind he was dying of sweet pleasure/pain.

“I’m going to take off your robe.” One hand moved to her shoulders and pushed the material down her arms. The gown beneath glistened in the soft lights and hid her body too well. “Feel me as I remove this.” His fingers caressed her ankle then skimmed up her leg.

Vangee lifted when the gown neared her shoulders and sighed when it floated over her head and landed somewhere out of sight. “Is this how it is? To mate?”

“I have no idea, dear one.” His words got lost in a passionate kiss, accompanied by his hand scooping her breast into a high lift. It fell into his palm again and again. Massaged her body until she moaned. “I have never mated with a woman, only used them.” This time when he thrust against hers, he met hot female flesh.

“Aw. You excite me. Touch me. Burn me.”

They explored each other. No place lay undiscovered, too polite for exploration, for loving touches, soft kisses. Gambrel held on to his desires to pleasure Vangee, but finally he could wait no longer.

“I want to be part of you. Now. I want you prepared.” His finger dipped into her sheath, confirmed her readiness. Her woman’s fluid glistened on his fingers. “You are so small. I might hurt you. I am not sure what happens to Ancadians at a moment like this.”

“I care not if there is pain, ‘Brel. Only that you fill me with your body, heart, and soul.”

Her words released his tight hold, and he rolled over her. How petite she looked. He pulled her legs around his waist. Perhaps she would tear. He might truly injure her.

A momentary conflict ate at his heart.

“’Brel, I can’t wait. I need you. My body tells me something is happening. I am not complete.” She tossed her head from side to side and squeezed her eyes closed. Suddenly she opened them wide, took Gambrel’s face between her palms, and pushed against him. “Fill me now. The promise. Keep the promise.”

Satisfied nothing would hurt either so much as denial, Gambrel positioned his body at her opening. His erection slid in partway.

Vangee’s mouth opened with a rounded O. “Don’t stop now. Please.”

In he pushed. A little further.

Vangee sensed the pleasure coming. Before he anticipated her action, she pulled away then rammed forward. She impaled herself on his shaft, threw her head back and groaned.

Gambrel almost missed her reaction for he lay buried in her. More pleasure to come.

He withdrew then advanced with slow and measured strides until she took over. Both palms flat on his rear, she guided him, pumped harder against him.

Capable of great physical jubilation, join the body with the heart and soul speaking one to the other and Heaven could not contain the elation of their first instant of greatest pleasure. To the stars and back they flew and returned, as replete as two bodies could be after experiencing such emotions.

Gambrel loomed above Vangee, his body still tucked firmly inside hers. She sprawled beneath him, legs, and arms wide, breath coming in gasps. Peace such as he had never seen glowed on her face. She looked boneless. In truth, he was as boneless as his lover.

His lover. Vangee Windrum was his lover. The thought thrilled him.

“A promise well kept, Gambrel Sarjean.” Her whisper came from somewhere under his chin. “I want more.”

To ensure he did not leave her wanting, she circled his waist with her legs, wrapped her arms around his neck, and brought his lips to hers. Her passion ignited his again. Resisting her invitation proved impossible.

A promise kept more than once as the Fenix slipped through the darkness of space. A promise of loving and learning. But not a promise of commitment.

The gods apparently didn’t hear him. A fist pounded at the panel of their cabin door. An authoritative voice rang out, “Mistress Windrum, Captain Merlo needs you immediately. I will accompany you.”

Silence fell within the room. Would murder right now be justified, Gambrel wondered? Caught in this situation, his body lay in a state of readiness not soon to be eased, it appeared.

He had forgotten the circumstances under which they sailed. The lives of all aboard ship and those of the fleet might be in danger, and Merlo wanted Vangee for some reason. Though his mind accepted the truth, his body refused to acknowledge the end of their tryst.

The man in the passageway pounded again. “Mistress Windrum, you are needed now.”

“’Brel, I must go.” To belie her hasty words, she kissed his rump and ran her tongue along the base of his spine. Bumps of anticipation rose over his skin. One hand fondled the sweet curve of his ass. She stretched out until she lay on her back at his side.

Did she recognize the raw need in his gaze? Evidently, she did. She pressed a quick but hot kiss on his stubborn lips. “This is not over, Gambrel Sarjean.” She whirled around until her feet thumped the floor. But before she left his bed, she gave him one of Dara’s coquettish flirts. “I promise. This is not over.”

“I am coming.” Her words rang out to the man in the corridor, sounding like the every day Vangee. Not like a woman who almost seduced Gambrel in his own bed.

“Rest while I see what the captain needs. Do you think you can do that?” Her voice teased him, her words saucy and tempting.

Wicked woman! Of course he could not rest properly. She had filled his body with need and now planned on leaving. His soul demanded completion, but Gambrel knew in the sensible part of his mind that duty called.

“I will lay here, woman, but rest is not possible.” His words came out in a fierce growl intended to frighten her.

Instead, she giggled. She brushed his hair to one side and whispered softly. “I know nothing of loving, and yet my body vibrates. Rest? I know I could not rest either. I shall hurry.”

Her gray clock wrapped around her and the hood concealing her face, Vangee left. The high his body’s need eventually drained away. Gambrel waited but not graciously.

* * * *

Gambrel became aware that Vangee returned to the cabin because she woke him. Her restless pacing sent her careening into a chair. She came back from her meeting in a far different mood than when she left.

When she acted so agitated, he grew concerned. “What did the captain want?” Rest had stiffened muscles weakened by injury. He found it difficult to watch her while lying on his stomach.

She paced, lost in her own thoughts, heedless of his question.

Apprehension growing, Gambrel swiveled until he sat at the edge of the bed, pain riding him hard. The cover lay loosely over his lap. The medicine across his back no longer soothed because the long swath of torn skin again tortured him. Vangee had been gone a long time.

“What is the matter?” He pulled himself straighter, ready to help if needed though his body protested every movement.

“The fleet is in panic. Rather, the souls aboard are. Riots have broken out. Many of the ships’ crews have been through rock showers. Land passengers from Ancade have not. They fear…with good reason. Nevertheless, their terror threatens the fleet’s safety. Danger comes from within the ships as well as out. As fleet commander, Captain Merlo asked for my help.”

When Gambrel pulled his brows together in a frown, she reminded him of a fact he conveniently forgot. “Do you not remember what I am? A Radiant, ‘Brel. Remember? I project and control emotions.”

“Why does the captain want you?” When he tried to stand, she waved him down then sat beside him. Her woebegone expression stressed him.

“Captain Merlo expects me to calm the fleet. Project tranquility and hope.” She wrung her hands, one over the other in repetitive moves that caught Gambrel’s attention.

“So? You can do this. Can’t you?”

“I can. Yes, but…” Her words trailed off.

“There’s a problem?”

She nodded and twisted her hands harder. He seized them in one of his and held them pressed to the bed.

“Tell me.” His strength was limited at the moment, but he would help if possible. Meanwhile his back and rear burned. He slumped in discomfort.

“Lie down. You have been hurt badly, and won’t get over it soon. Rest.” She tried to push him on to the bed, but he resisted.

“Something’s wrong. Tell me why Merlo’s request distresses you so.”

“I just can’t.” Her face set in a stubborn grimace, she turned her back to him.

“You can’t? Or you won’t?” Her attitude surprised then infuriated him. She, of all people, held life most valuable. Why did she refuse to help those in panic? When she didn’t answer, he slid his hand onto her thigh. Using subtle pressure, he squeezed, seeking her attention.

Finally, she relented. “All right. I won’t project.” She jumped off his bed and ran across the cabin to her own bunk where she flung herself down and began to cry.

Her actions surprised Gambrel so much his jaw dropped. Like an aged one with brittle bones and aching limbs, he struggled off the bed, the sheet held in one massive fist. Across the floor he shuffled until he stood next to her bunk. His body pressed against the wall, he worked his way through what he had learned since joining the fleet.

“You project emotions. I’ve seen this. Been part of it. Your aura seems limited. Big enough for both of us, if I recall from that fight on Ancade when we met. Yet you control crowds. Merlo told me so. Now the captain wants you to communicate peace and calm to a fleet of five hundred ships?” Thoughts tumbled through his mind. The mechanics of how she did what she did escaped him.

“How do you send emotion to and control a crowd, like those on a single ship or perhaps in a meeting on Ancade?” He let the question hang. For a minute, he feared she would not answer.

While he waited, he smelled her fear. A sharp bitter stench. Here in this room where she should feel safest, she was afraid? Of what she did naturally?

She rolled on to her back, and he saw her eyes. Those golden spots inside the gray held such sorrow he now feared her answer.

“When I am by myself or with one other like you, I draw power from myself. When I control a large group, I draw power from those around me. With so many, most feel tired, but remain unharmed. Definitely not aware of what I do. The minute amount of power I use amplifies my own. Do you understand?” A tear slipped down her cheek to soak into her hair. Her explanation apparently did nothing to calm her fears. Clinched muscles and her head tossed side to side reflected her mounting tension.

He understood the mechanics of her ability now. And her fear. “If you project to the fleet at such a distance, you will require many. The harm will increase?” Her nod confirmed his guess.

He shifted his stance, his back throbbing. The cover rode low on his hips, his fistful of cloth at his manhood. He should dress, but other things took priority over modesty.

“Have you ever tried such a long projecting before?”

Vangee shook her head. She looked at him with something akin to hope.

“If someone big and strong helped, could you reach the fleet? At least a greater portion?” Gambrel offered his body and soul, knowing he might die.

In an instant she realized what he did. Off the bed she shot, like one of the fire rocks still bombarding the ship. Their noisy rattle and bang provided the background to an intense argument.

“I will not endanger your life for this.” She pounded both fists against his chest, her words intimate, raw, desperate. “They do not need my help to survive.” Again, she hit him, fighting both him and his offer. Tears coursed down her cheeks. “Your injuries… Your strength is not …” Her words trailed off. “What if you die?”

He held her away. She wasn’t hurting him, merely bruising her hands against his chest muscles. He allowed her a moment of rage before shaking her—hard.

“Listen to me. You can prevent these souls from harming themselves and others. If Pessios, Effie or Dara were out there—as indeed they are—would you hesitate? No! By the gods, you can do this. We can do this. You project, and I will fuel your power.” He left the next thought unspoken—he would assist as long as possible.

“No! I will not do this!” She whirled away, her eyes wide like a frightened animal trapped in a small space. When her frantic pacing brought her close to Gambrel again, he grabbed and held her in his embrace with one stout arm, fully against his body.

“Listen to me, woman,” he hissed. “We have seen happier times aboard this ship. Song and laughter rode the tides as surely as we did. That time is past, and these souls have lost the memory. Give them peace. Hope.”

When she wiggled and shook her head, her tears falling in messy drops on his chest, he jerked her hard. “I love you. With every fiber of my heart, body, and soul. We almost had it all not long ago, and you promised me an ending.” He pulled her closer yet, hurting her even as he proclaimed his love. “You promised.”

His embrace eased a bit. “But if you do not help those in need, you are not the woman I think you are. The woman I love. And,” he paused for effect, “you are not the woman you know yourself to be. You would never get over the damage done this day if you do not act—and soon.”

He eased her feet to the worn planks. “You project, and I will help. The gods of the universe set this before us.” He pushed her away. She stood on her own. “Will you do this?”

Frozen in place, her face told him so many things. Anger, in the heavy silence she gave him. Longing. One hand rested, fist closed, over her heart. Finally, she broke her self-imposed stillness. “I yearn for an earlier time, before our sun came to die. I mourn that cannot be, for I wish to have met you then. Loved you then.”

She spoke as if saying farewell. “You tell me that you love me. I know no love other than a daughter for a father. Your kind of love I want to learn. So many emotions, so conflicting. Soaring joy one minute, vast despair the next. I want to be consumed by the emotion a mate has for her chosen one. Love will shine through me, eat me whole, and leave nothing behind but my feelings for you. But…” Her anguish turned to humor. “I suppose this must be done first if I have any chance of keeping my promise.”

Her weak grin brightened when he pulled her into a real embrace and kissed her. Once. Hard. “We will keep that promise, sweet one.” Gambrel rested his chin on top of her head, his smile gone in the face of the reality that awaited them and the pain he suffered already. Vangee’s fear and hopelessness showed him how dangerous this undertaking was. The possibility existed one or the other—perhaps both—might not survive the projecting.

His attempt at humor prepared the stage for their task. “Perhaps I should dress more appropriately but, in honest words, my rear hurts too much to put on clothes.”

“Oh, I don’t know, ‘Brel.” She stood with hands on hips, head tilted first one way then the other. “I think the cover quite seductive.”

Her light words masked her worries, he sensed. “Come, love. Let us do what needs to be done this day.” He moved her next to his large bed. “In case I turn unmindful. I want to land on something soft.” He turned his back to the bed. “How do we proceed?”

“I will call on my power then draw from you. You will feel strange. Perhaps lose your senses. I’m not sure. I’ve never spoken to anyone I used.” She turned so that her shoulders rested against his chest. “Once before you guarded my back. Move in close, hulking one.” Her words reminded him of the first time they met when all she saw was a huge man in need of protection. She stretched out her arms and widened her stance.

As soon as her eyes closed, he matched her posture. His thicker arms surpassed her length, and his height overshadowed hers. The bed cover fell at his feet.

Vangee pulled in deep breaths, released each slowly, deliberately.

In order to aid her to the best of his ability, Gambrel imitated her. He closed his eyes and aligned his body to hers. As her back expanded and fell against his chest, her head rested against him. Her arms gravitated to his so they stood pressed firmly together. The seam of her rear cradled his manhood which now lay docile. Lust and desire had no place in their cabin at that moment.

By degrees, the very fragrance of the air around Gambrel changed. Grew sharper, like the flavor a perfume might have if it were food. Pressure bore down on him. For an instant, he swayed, light-headed, and wondered if he would go mindless. But he drew a steadying breath and let his muscles go limp. A buzzing rang somewhere. He located the annoying sound—in his mind. Was Vangee drawing on his power? His life force?

Brightness filtered through his closed eyelids. He opened them to slits then snapped both open. A glow emanated in front of him, touched him.

Vangee glowed, shimmered with radiants of power. Brilliant streaks of light flared from her. Brighter still and longer did the colored stripes grow. She drew on Gambrel’s life force, no question now. Flares of radiant luminosity expanded as she demanded more.

For a minute, his sight faded. He fought to remain in his senses while his breathing labored. Individual thumps interspersed by intermittent spaces of time became his heartbeat. Air became hotter, thicker. His skin prickled as if the moisture in it were being drawn out. As she pulled away his energy, his monstrous frame seemed to shrink and diminish.

Shallow draughts of stifling air filled his lungs only because Gambrel intentionally expanded then contracted his aching lungs. Nothing worked as usual. His back arched so rigidly that the burned flesh crinkled. Blood ran down his spine to splat on the deck in noisy drops. Even the chaotic pounding of the rock shower receded as Vangee reached for the fleet. His skin seemed to shrivel. Taunt muscles bulged so tight his body hurt.

Pain pounded between his ears, behind his eyelids. Muscles stretched to the limit of endurance, and still he supported one who literally used him to hold her upright. Did her skin burn? Did her eyes feel like they were pushed out of her head? Was she aware of an overpowering sweetness or hear the clattering of a thousand night flyers in her imagination?

Blackness threatened Gambrel. He would not—must not—fade, or she might be lost. No one knew what consequences would come of this eventide’s work. The pain that once shouted its presence no longer seemed important. When his legs grew too weak to stand, he sank to the edge of the bed. Not for the world though did he release Vangee. He grabbed her by the hips and held fast while he rested his head in the small of her back. Stay awake, he repeated over and over. Do not leave her alone.

Lungs begged for air, and his body grew numb. Though he touched Vangee, he no longer registered the sensation. For the first time in his life, Gambrel knew himself to be more than he imagined.

The cabin glowed. He thought the Radiant still sat on his lap but wasn’t sure. Sight faded then returned, teased him. A roar filled his ears so even the thud of the rock shower fell away. With little conscious awareness, Gambrel slipped from the world.

Jacon and Captain Merlo leaned over the couple. Only the shallow movement of each chest attested to their being alive. When the two entered the cabin at morning rise, they found Gambrel flat on his back, Vangee sprawled on top of him. Even moving him to one side, turning him on his stomach, and gently pulling off the bed covers stuck to the dried blood of his back did not wake the man. They lay Vangee next to him.

Modesty and convention were long past, Captain Merlo pointed out, when they left the pair sleeping side by side. Enormous power had surged from both. Reports indicated all was well throughout the fleet. Did the couple simply need time to recuperate? Or would they remain in this sleep-like state forever?

“Someone must sit with them until they wake.” Sorrow lined Jacon’s face. Deep furrows crossed across his forehead. “But I have no idea when that might be.”

Two seven-days later, Vangee told Gambrel what happened after they collapsed. She entertained him with her tale while friends came and went. Considering her tale, he knew the gods had favored them in their task.

“We finished the projecting and collapsed on your bed. Jacon and Captain Merlo found us the next morning rise. We appeared mindless though alive. From reports back to him, we calmed those who panicked.”

Merlo added more when he visited Gambrel. “By nooning of that day, the Fenix sailed out of the rock shower. By eventide, all ships cleared the phenomenon. Two vanished in fiery blasts when flamers disabled the atmospheric burble then crashed into the propulsion engines. Over two hundred souls gone. The first loss of our voyage. The last, I pray, though I know others will die along the way.”

Once clear of danger, Effie, Jacon, his wife Mirril, the grower Wangon and his wife Chiffro sat with them. Mirril sat with the pair when Vangee opened her eyes.

Vangee brushed a fall of hair off Gambrel’s forehead as she continued the story. “The first thing I saw was the back of your head, the long thick hair laying on your shoulder. Not realizing anyone was near; I curled my body against your side and lifted a handful to smell. When I sighed, someone beside the bed coughed. Diplomatically, I might add.”

She giggled. “My heart almost stopped, I was so frightened. I repeated one of your favorite bad words and embarrassed Mirril.”

Gambrel laughed, and she swatted him.

“Once I awoke, I grew concerned when you remained unmindful. I stayed with you though others checked every day. I dressed your wounds, bathed you, but did not try to feed you. I feared anything going down your throat might kill you if not swallowed properly.”

“On the fifth eventide, Pessios sat with me. You shifted in bed then tried to turn on your side. Pain prevented that, so you wiggled around into a new position. Though you never woke, your sleep seemed more natural than before.” All aboard the Fenix, with a few exceptions she pointed out, rejoiced.

“Last morning rise as the fourth bell rang, Effie visited. Dara played quietly on the bed covers next to you. Effie earlier showed her your mending back and hip and warned the tiny one not to touch. Thanks be to the gods, this time Dara ignored her mother’s warning.”

“While we talked, she crawled over you until she sat by your arm—the one cocked up before your face. She wound up sitting astride your upper arm, one set of foot digits near your nose. I spotted her at that moment. Without saying anything, I caught Effie’s attention but cautioned her to silence. The child teased your nose, using her foot. She tickled then stopped. When you didn’t respond, she tried again. Several times she tapped you and all but wiggled her digits inside. I covered my mouth to keep from laughing aloud.”

“She tired of playing with you. You would not wake up, you see. On her stomach, down on your arm, she rested her chin on her crossed hands. For the longest time she must have pondered your sleepiness, I think. I supposed she wondered why you ignored her. She must have decided that you had slept long enough. First, she patted your cheek. On you slept. Finally, she hit you under your eye.”

Gambrel rubbed his cheek. “I remember coming awake with a roar. I rose up on both hands, and sent Dara flying across the bed to land against the wall. She rebounded with a shriek of delight I first took for pain. I think she was happy I awoke at last. Her short legs churned as fast as possible to me. She threw herself into my arms even though I moved not well. The child babbled like her stored tales needed to come out at one time.”

He laughed. “I wasn’t awake well before being bombarded by one child, two women, and many questions. Long minutes passed before I made sense of what had happened.”

Dara had refused to leave and kicked up a fuss that scandalized her mother and entertained Gambrel. When he had convinced the poor woman he was awake and feeling as well as could be expected, Effie had departed to spread the news of his recovery. Dara remained. Entrenched in the curve of Gambrel’s arm, she didn’t seem to mind when he ignored her. She chattered though he seldom answered. All was as it once was.

Amazed by her tale, he reached for Vangee’s hand and laid it beside him on the bed. She knelt next to him. One hand ran through his hair, turn after turn. Both locked gazes, happy to be awake and in their proper senses.

By early eventide, Gambrel knew the full story. Dara fell asleep next to him. Effie took her to bed while friends welcomed him back from the other side.
